So I'm really liking Google+. I am enjoying the UI and the features especially for mobile updates. I wish Google Sites had the same mobile features to make it easier to update here while mobile. So lets see how this +1 button works and what secrets the metrics will tell. |

Canada is an amazing place. A month ago, at the start of this election campaign, no one suspected what could happen. So many big surprises, most of them with a strange darker side: the Conservatives are now Canada's only truly national party, and managed to win the first electoral majority in Canadian history without Quebec; the NDP tripled their seats, its caucus is now 2/3 Quebecois and is based almost exclusively in the east of the country, and its authority dependent on the most fickle voting bloc in the country; the Liberals were humiliated and unless they figure out what they stand for risk following their British cousins to permanent 3rd party status; the Bloc Quebecois has been destroyed and its popular leader defeated in his own riding but leaving Quebec representation exclusively in the hands of the opposition, again; the Green party won their first seat but lost half their popular vote. There are so many different things to talk about, but one in particular stands out: the Conservatives achieved their victory without Quebec, while at the same time the province has voted overwhelmingly for a federalist party that has little chance of achieving anything concrete for them by virtue of its opposition status. The province's political position within the country has been weakened considerably. This situation has the potential to discredit federalism even further in Quebec; there is now no buffer between Quebecois nationalism and federal representation, meaning that Quebec nationalists will be able to blame federalism directly for just about anything. The destruction of the Bloc is likely to anger and embolden sovereigntists in the Parti Quebecois; if the PQ manages to win the provincial election that is due within 2 years, expect another referendum and the ensuing constitutional crisis. It will be interesting to see how the Conservatives deal with a Quebec that they no longer need to win a majority government. Exciting times. You have to love a country where it seems just about anything can happen, and you can have so many weird things happen at the same time in just one election. This is going to be a very different country in 4 years, not just due to what the Conservatives can now do with impunity, but because of the strange and novel nature of the political landscape.
